Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has made a great decision by changing her weight category to 53 kg. This incredible weight change has indeed changed her mind set and she seems to be really relishing it well.
The 24 year old Indian wrestler hails from a successful family of wrestlers and her cousins Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari are international wrestlers and Commonwealth Games medalists.
The wrestler is the first Indian women to win a gold medal in both Commonwealth and Asian Games. With her sheer performances, she has become the first Indian athlete who has been nominated Laureus World Sports Awards on February 18, 2019
Vinesh Phoga was the top performer in the 50 kg category and has won gold medals at the Asian Games, as well as the Commonwealth Games last year. But this star athlete missed out an opportunity at competing at the World Championship as she was suffering from an elbow injury. She shifted to the 53 kilo gram category this year.
In the new category, Vinesh had mixed experience. She had to satisfy herself with a silver medal at Dan Kolov and a bronze medal at the Asian championship. But she was quick enough to win the Gold medal at the Grand Prix of Spain and Yasar Dogu.
In a recent interview, Vinesh said that it takes time to align with novel things. It’s not bodily but emotionally they have to be equipped better.
“In 50 kg, I knew that except 3-4 wrestlers I am not going to give anyone six minutes but in 53 kg, competing 4-5 bouts for six minutes in a row is the new challenge for me.”
She also said, “I am not giving priority to any one, two or three athletes. I am focusing on all. In 50kg, I would have given you 3-4 names but all are same in 53kg. The mindset that I am developing is that I have to give good fight for full six minutes.”
