This is the first time in the record of East Central Railway (ECR), three females including two loco pilots and a guard – accepted a self-regulating charge of a goods train and operated it from Danapur station to Fatuha on July 27.
On Friday, the two loco pilots – Soni Kumari and Vibha Kumari – and guard Swati Swaroop ran the goods trains covering a distance of 31km, recognizing the “all right” indications provided by station masters at diverse stations to entail that the train is continuing in a secure and appropriate way.
Praising the bravery and technological knowledge of the female crew members, Danapur DRM Ranjan Prakash Thakur stated that it was simple to direct a passenger train, but very tricky to handle a goods train.
“It is just the beginning for these women loco pilots and guard as far as piloting goods trains is concerned. Initially, their services will be utilised for short distance journey during daytime only. From the safety point of view, railways had provided women RPF staff to escort these loco pilots and guard from Danapur to Fatuha station,” Ranjan Prakash Thakur said.
Ranjan Prakash Thakur also stated that the Danapur zone of ECR has some fully trained female loco pilots as well as guards.
“These women crew members have proved that they are second to none when it comes to piloting passenger and goods trains. Railways are committed to giving more incentives to women staff and give an impetus to women empowerment policy of the ministry of railways,” he said.
The railway department has set up 16 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at the Danapur station last Friday by making use of the funds sanctioned under the Nirbhaya Fund, which got declared during 2013 Union Budget to back up proposals by the administration and NGOs functioning in the direction of shielding the pride and ensuring protection of females in the nation.
The railway department also set up coach signal boards at Danapur station’s platforms for the ease of travellers.
“The facility will become functional soon as several mail and express trains with load combination of 24 coaches either originate from or pass through Danapur station,” stated an ECR representative, adding attempts are also being made to get rid of encroachments from around the station for smooth movement of heavy vehicles.
