Proud Moment For Nation: Sikkim Nominated as First 100% Organic State In The World

Sikkim, India's north-eastern state has bagged the Future Policy Award for being the," 100 percent organic state in the world", that promotes agroecological and sustainable food systems in the world. The state won this award after competing around 25 countries, reported by the Press Trust of India and was conferred by the Food and Agriculture Organisation. It's just not the state to bag the title of 100 percent organic state but also is the cleanest state of India.

The Himalayan state of the nation was granted with the honour during the World Food Week at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome, Italy. It's an honour for the Country as Sikkim got the first Future Policy Award 2018 for leading efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs).

This award function is held every year to recognize and give honour to the efforts in different social issues categories like violence against women and girls, pollution in the oceans and rivers, nuclear weapons and desertification.

“We have achieved fully-organic status at the end of December. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will formally announce this at a sustainable agriculture conference in Gangtok on 18 January,” Sikkim Organic Mission’s executive director Dr Anbalagan told PTI in an earlier confession when Sikkim became India’s first fully organic state by converting around 75,000 hectares of agricultural land into sustainable cultivation.

“There was the only limited use of chemical fertilizers prior to 2003 and the crop cultivation depended on low external inputs. Farmers were traditionally familiar in production and use of farmyard manure and compost. In general, there was no set back in productivity,” the agricultural secretary said in a conversation.

After that Brazil was awarded the second prize for a policy of buying food for school meals from family farms. Denmark shared the prize with Brazil for a successful policy of encouraging people to buy more organic food, the organic things are really better and natural so better incline yourself towards organicity.
