Former SC judge Kurian Joseph questions Ranjan Gogoi nomination, says ‘it has shaken confidence’

Former SC judge Justice Kurian Joseph said the nomination of Ranjan Gogoi for Rajya Sabha has shaken the confidence of people in the independence of the judiciary.

Judge Gogoi was one among the four important judges including Madan B. Lokur, J.S. Chelameswar and Kurian who organized a public interview on January 12, 2018 to alert the country about the apparent encroachments by the government into Supreme Court.

The four appointed authorities had advised the country at the press meet that any special authority was being allowed to choose Benches of the Supreme Court by progressive Chief Justices. The interview session was held when Judge Loya's case was pending in the Supreme Court.

Former SC judge Gogoi's resignation comes under a period of 6 months since his retirement in November 2019. As CJI, he had driven the bench which decided for the Hindu side on the responsibility for disputed land in the Ayodhya title bids. Judge Kurian said, ''People's confidence has been shaken after his nomination and I question this nomination process. This was the reason I never accepted or approached anyone for nomination for any post after my retirement and I will continue to do so.''
