Sanju Producer Vidhu Vinod had said “Better make biopic on my life than on Sanjay Dutt”

Rajkumar Hirani's upcoming film 'Sanju' has already created a buzz in the film industry and among the fans as well. The movie is based on the controversial life of Sanjay Dutt. It will showcase the aspects of his life that nobody knows. Ranbir Kapoor is playing Sanjay Dutt in the film while Paresh Rawal will play his father Sunil Dutt.

The idea of making a film based on the life of Sanjay Dutt was initially criticized. Firstly, because he is still a living legend and biopics were generally made on the lives of legends who are not alive. Secondly, everybody thought that there is nothing special about Dutt's life that qualifies for a biopic film.

Even 'Sanju' producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra was initially against the idea and had laughed it off when director Rajkumar Hirani had first presented it to him. In an interview with a leading daily, Chopra said, “When he told me, I was like, ‘What’s there in Sanjay Dutt’s life that merits being made into a film?! It’s better you make a film on my life… how I left Kashmir as a young boy and struggled when I came to Bombay.’ (Laughs) I thought Raju and Abhijat (Joshi, Sanju’s co-writer) had lost their minds!"

However, it was when Raju narrated the whole story, Chopra gained interest in producing the film. Chopra says, “When he (Hirani) sat me down and started narrating all that had happened in Sanju’s life, I was stunned! At first, I thought it was hogwash… that Sanju was somehow not telling Raju the truth, but when we started researching all that he’s said — from the 308 girlfriends he had to how he begged on the streets of US for the money to buy a bus ticket — we realised that everything he had told us was true!”

Sanju is majorly based on the relationship between a father and son. Vidu Vinod Chopra says that he was amused to know that the tears in 'Munna Bhai MBBS' scene where Sanjay asked his father’s forgiveness were for real.  Chopra says, “I was standing there on the set of Munna Bhai and I had no idea they were actually living that scene."

'Sanju' stars Ranbir Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Dia Mirza, Manisha Koirala, Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, and Vicky Kaushal.
