Ranbir Kapoor was the first and only choice of filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani for playing Sanjay Dutt. The filmmaker has already worked with Sanjay Dutt and this actor-director duo gave blockbuster hits 'Munnabhai MBBS' and 'Lage Raho Munnabhai'. Also the director and producer of movie 'Rajkumar' praised Ranbir's hard-work and said "Ranbir worked very hard to get the physicality right. He spent days watching tons of videos to strike the right balance and when you observe him in the film, you will notice that there is a resemblance of Sanjay Dutt, yet you know it is Ranbir Kapoor. If he did anything slightly more, it would look caricaturish and if he did a little less, it wouldn’t work."

There are many similarities between Sanjay and Ranbir as they both belong from a filmy background. Both of them already lived a life among actors and they don't come from outside the industry to become actors. The filmmaker also revealed that these similarities made him see Ranbir as Sanju. He also told both the actors have a common X-factor which is their charm.
