Every year, World Environment Day is celebrated on the 5th of June across the globe. Today is no different, and to make a difference to the world, a real contribution, Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar launched #SelfieWithSapling campaign, urging people to plant saplings and then click a selfie with the planted sapling.
Emphasizing people’s participation or ‘jan bhagidhari’, Prakash Javadekar who took charge as union minister for environment in newly elected government led by PM Narendra Modi, said is integral to tackle environment issues and it needs to become a people’s movement.
"June 5 is celebrated as World Environment Day. I am sure people of this country will enthusiastically participate in it. I appeal to the people to plant a sapling, click a picture with it and post it on social media using '#SelfieWithSapling'. We need such initiatives as we are creating a carbon sink," the minister said.
"The Modi government believes that the environment is not just a government programme but a people's programme," he added. While China hosts the World Environment Day 2019 with a theme of ‘Air Pollution’, India released a music video “Hawa Aane De” for this year’s theme of World Environment Day.
The video features some big names such as Akshay Kumar and Rajkumar Rao, along with singers Shaan, Sunidhi Chauhan and Shankar Mahadevan lending their voice to the song. This looks like a great initiative from all the people involved in the cause. Right from the people on the ground level to celebs and ministers who are trying to make a difference for a better tomorrow.
This comes after the plans of government who had launched the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) in January this year in order to reduce the level of air pollution by 2024. Various messages and videos about the environment have gone viral in the last few days spreading awareness and pleading people to contribute their efforts towards making a small step which could result in a long term result over time.
