Opening day of Ashes 2019: Umpire took the seven wrong decisions

On Thursday during one of the first Test of Ashes 2019 at Edgbaston, Birmingham, umpires Aleem Dar and Joel Wilson took as many as seven wrong decisions and have been caught in problem due to their wrong decisions. Post World Cup 2019 final match, where umpire Kumar Dharamasena gave England important runs in the final over of the match,  Umpiring has been under scrutiny.

David Warner took the first wrong decision in the second over as he edged the ball to the wicketkeeper. The umpire even turned Stuart Broad down. His second wrong decision was taken in the fourth over. Warner was adjudged leg before wicket but Hawkeye showed the ball had been untouched the stumps by a noticeable margin.

Then in the 15th over, Usman Khawaja edged the ball to Buttler. Even after England team's appeal, umpire Joel Wilson didn't listen. However, England skipper Joe Root was convinced that Khawaja had edged the ball.

Then, things went over head and baffled Steve Smith took the review straightaway. As Smith played the ball with his pads and umpired raise his finger. Once again, Hawkeye showed that the ball was untoched the off stump by a decent margin.

The next blunder he made when despite hitting the ball Matthew Wade’s back pad, the umpire showed his disagreement with the bowler and another decision was reversed. James Pattinson was given out and it was almost a repeat of Warner’s dismissal. Again Hawkeye showed that the ball was untouched the leg stump. The last wrong decision was taken when huge inside edge went off the bat and into the pads. But, the umpire made Peter Siddle out. Siddle smiled and reviewed the decision and went on to make a 50-plus partnership with Smith.

Former England cricketers Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton showed their disappointment with the umpiring standards. “The standard of umpiring today has been ordinary,” Atherton said in the commentary box.

Also, Twittetatis reacted on  the umpiring. A user wrote: The umpires disasterclass continues, 5 wickets have fallen same as the no of wrong decisions by the unpires. Aleem Dar 3-2 Joel Wilson.
