Netflix Sacred Games: Delhi HC listens plea for misrepresenting facts about Rajiv Gandhi

A plea is filed in the Delhi High Court on Thursday which requests to remove offensive remarks made against former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi in the web series Sacred Games of Netflix. A bench of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Chander Shekhar also enquired the meaning of the word Fattu which has been used in the fourth episode of the series as he had some doubts about the English translation that has been used.

After this, the counsel for Netflix, Chanderlal said that they have changed the English translation and replaced it with Wimp instead of a more offensive word used earlier.

The court said, "Criticism or even expression of dissatisfaction is permissible. So which portion do you think has been violating these things".

Shashank Garg, counsel for the petitioner, said, whether the "expression of viewpoint is stopped" adding that "there is no regulation on the internet as of now except in some limited cases". To this, the bench said, “Only when we find that there is something related to the law or illegal. As far as defamation is concerned, that right is available to you".

The court has fixed August 7 as the next date of hearing. The plea advocate Nikhil Bhalla asks to ensure the removal of the allegedly offensive scenes and remarks made directly or indirectly against the former prime minister or his family. It alleged that the series incorrectly depicts historical events of the country.

The controversy over the web series started Rajiv Sinha, a Congress member from West Bengal filed a complaint alleging that the series was “misrepresenting facts during his (Rajiv Gandhi) regime”.

Sacred Games is based on Vikram Chandra’s 2006 thriller novel and is produced by Reliance Entertainment’s Phantom Films joint venture. The star cast of the show is Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Saif Ali Khan, and Radhika Apte.
