Manto Review: Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s Yet Another Flawless Performance Is Worth A Watch

Here come Friday and Bollywood came up with another movie. Today two movies got released, Nawazuddin Siddique starer Manto and Shahid Kapoor starer Batti Gul Meter Chalu. So before you get your tickets lets take a full review of MANTO movie here.

Manto features an ensemble star cast like Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Rasika Dugal, Rajshri Deshpande, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Rishi Kapoor, Paresh Rawal among others. For those, who don't know about Manto- His full name was Saadat Hasan Manto, born on 1 May 1912, a writer and a well-known name in the film industry. Manto was known to write about the hard truths of society that no one dared to talk about. He is best known for his stories about the partition of India immediately following independence in 1947.

His life deserves a film to be made and no one could better describe him other than Nandita Das who helmed this movie who previously directed Firaaq- powerful and affecting movie it was. No doubt, Manto is her second best.

Manto, the movie will take you to the time when the subcontinent was divided into parts - India and Pakistan where Manto describes how this partition is useless with his hard-hitting writing. It all leads to questioning his own belonging who spent his life in Mumbai and decided to relocate to Pakistan after partition.

The director parted the movie in two- pre-independence Bombay and post-independence Lahore. In the first half, the movie talks about Manto's life in between the glamorous world of Bollywood and his friends and a few of his writings. The second half will show his life after partition who struggled to remain as a free writer in the country.

Star of the movie Nawazuddin Siddiqui's yet another great performance of his career leaves the audience astonished. The filmmaker Das tells all about Manto which you needs to know in a short and precise way with an ongoing writer's fictional stories as a relief which you will like. Dialogues are very well-written where the conversations will give you the feel of poetic exchange of words. Words are used very smartly which make you feel to use the dialogues sometimes in your life.

However, the audience will feel a little disconnected from the movie as when we try to focus on one part we are taken to yet another phase of his life. You will enjoy another actors performance like Rasika Duggal as Manto’s wife Safia, Tahir Raj Bhasin as Shyam and Rajshri Deshpande in the role of Ismat Chugtai. 4

Those who know about Manto will find it less amusing as it tells already known things about him. Manto is not known by everyone and if you will be watching the movie there are a few scenes in it which will let you know about him.

In short, watch the movie on your own unless be prepared for a research that you'll have to do after watching it unless who know Manto and his work will surely enjoy the movie.
