Mumbai Will Have A New Nightlife: 31 Malls And 4 HotSpots To Stay Open 24 by 7

'BMC is planning to allow 31 malls and 4 hot spots to stay open for 24×7' was the headlines of every media portal for a few months ago. The civic body was seeking permission to open popular hot spots and malls all day and night and making Mumbai an open 24×7 city.

A report regarding the same was published: “Soon, you might be able to go for dinner or even shopping at malls even in the dead of night, if a BMC plan gets the police go-ahead. The civic body has written to the police commissioner seeking opinion over allowing 31 malls and four popular spots to remain open 24×7.”

Ajoy Mehta, BMC commissioner had written to the police commissioner of Mumbai to seek permission keeping a few selected centres open 24×7. He referred to the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Service Condition) Act, 2017, which provided for shops and establishments to remain open 24/7 if not restricted by the state in public interest.

The civil body list of the centre includes the 31 malls Mumbai and 4 hot spots such as shops and establishments around Churchgate railway station, CSMT, the airports and the Gateway of India. Malls like Phoenix Marketcity (Lower Parel and Kurla), Globus Bandra, Infiniti Malad and Oberoi Goregaon are on the list.

As per a civil official: "This is only a preliminary list and we plan to include more commercial establishments in the months to come. Once we receive an opinion from the police we would write to the state government as well about the proposal."

Also, the BMC commissioner confirmed the plan: "We have initiated the process and want to want to prepare the list in consultation with the police, so we have sought their opinion. Depending on the experience the further course would be decided."

With this plan of BMC, Mumbaikars and visitors will be able to enjoy a nightlife of Mumbai by going out at midnight, watching films, having dinner, shop for their necessities, and what not. However, no alcohol will be served in shops and restaurants serving alcohol in this period.

So, Mumbaikars will not have to wait for the sun to have fun. Not only the days but also the nights are theirs as the city will now be opened for 24×7.
