People, nowadays are struggling to switch to sustainable living and inculcate eco-friendly habits. It is an urgent need of the hour for all of us and in the midst of it all, we have environmentally aware architects and designers who are creatively transforming how we live.
And the ‘Cardboard Cafe’ in Mumbai is a great example of this. The name says it all. Everything that you touch in this cafe is made of cardboard. Nuru Karim, the designer has spearheaded this creation.
The concept is bound to spring a lot of questions in people’s minds, especially since the majority of the population has been conditioned into living in concrete structures. And here we have a cafe that serves delicious food on plates that compliment the inside brown cocoon made of cardboard and everything from the lamp shades, chairs, tables along with the coasters even are created of the same material.
And it also ensures that the changing moods of Mumbai’s weather doesn't affect its structure. We all know the torrential rains the city receives and it adverse effects. But Cardboard Cafe is protected from it all. If your concern is its potential of easily burning to the ground, the chances of it are as good as any other cafe constructed with the usual concrete.
It is surprising to know that three and a half months is all the time this cafe took to be created under the guidance of the architect. It is a great incentive to consider as opposed to the time spent in building something with bricks and mortar. The look of the cafe is sleek and futuristic, teasing the curiosity of its customers and inviting them into a welcoming ambience.
