“Dowry is putting a price tag on the girls”, says Parineeti Chopra

Despite the fact that dowry is unlawful in India since 1961, it is getting practiced, and actress Parineeti Chopra is amazed at how Indian families consider it a "gift".

"Everyone knows that dowry is illegal and immoral yet they practice it. What makes me angry is that people have renamed it 'gift' so it sounds good. Dowry simply infers that you are putting a price tag on the girl and buying her.

"We call ourselves modern but then what are we doing? To look superior, we are asking the girl's family for money and luxurious things. It is the unfortunate scenario of our country," Parineeti told IANS while promoting her next film "Jabariya Jodi".

A prompt aftereffect of the dowry is another ill practice— the demonstration of abducting qualified single men and convincing them to marry girls, generally at gunpoint. This practice, known as "pakadwa vivah" (forced marriage), is usually seen practised in Bihar for a serious length of time. Such forced marriage occurs in light of the fact that the family of the groom demands dowry in answer to the marriage.

"Jabariya Jodi" is a movie focused on the practice of "pakadwa vivah".

'Pakda vivah' is an anti-dowry practice, it isn't right. You can't just abduct someone and force them to get hitched. However, if there is no demand for dowry, there will be no 'pakdwa vivah'. I request people to stop putting a price tag on girl's life," Parineeti said.

Beside "Jabariya Jodi", Parineeti has another two power-packed movies in her kitty. She will be found in ace tennis player Saina Nehwal's biopic and the Hindi redo of "The Girl On The Train".

Talking about the Saina biopic, Parineeti said that it is one of her most challenging roles ever.

"It's very difficult to play somebody who is respected globally. I know there will be comparisons, and I am all prepared for that. I want to do justice while portraying Saina because she has achieved a lot in her life. I have to make everyone feel proud," she expressed, including: "For this particular role, I had to leave my comfort zone. No one would have envisioned that I will play a sportsperson in my life, anyway here I am. There are various challenges. I believe I conquer them all," Parineeti included.
