On Tuesday morning, Bollywood actor Rajiv Kapoor passed away at the age of 58. He left for heavenly abode after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was rushed to the hospital but the doctors we are not successful in reviving him. The whole entertainment industry is mourning after the sudden passing away of the actor.
For the unknown, Rajiv Kapoor was late actor-producer Raj Kapoor’s youngest son. He was also the younger brother to Randhir Kapoor and late actor Rishi Kapoor. Being from the Kapoor clan, the actor’s body was taken to the Kapoor residence in Chembur. It is here where his last rites took place.
Many Bollywood celebrities arrived at the Kapoor residence to bid goodbye to Rajiv Kapoor. The celebs include- Shah Rukh Khan, Alia Bhatt, Tara Sutaria, Chunky Panday, Sanjay Kapoor, and Maheep Kapoor. From the Kapoor family- Neetu Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Aadar Jain, Randhir Kapoor were present during Rajiv Kapoor’s last rites.
On the professional front, Rajiv Kapoor starred in about 14 Bollywood films. His acting career spanned from 1983 to 1990. However, he wasn’t able to create much of an impact with his acting proves.
He made his debut in Bollywood with the 1983 movie Ek Jaan Hai Hum. However, Rajiv had to wait till 1985 to taste the success. In 1985 he starred in the film Ram Teri Ganga Maili. The film did well at the Box Office.
The film helmed by Raj Kapoor starred actress Mandakini as the leady lady opposite Rajiv Kapoor. The film was the highest-grossing Hindi film that year. It was even certified Diamond Jubilee in Mumbai and Golden Jubilee in other major cities.
It will be interesting to know that Ram Teri Ganga Maili was also one of the highest-grossing films of the 1980s, alongside the 1981 Kranti and 1989 Maine Pyaar Kia.
The plot of the movie revolved around Narendra Sahay played by Rajiv Kapoor who is a rich man from Calcutta. He falls in love with a pahadi girl called Ganga essayed by Mandakini. They get married but Narendra has to leave soon after. He promises her that he will return.
The story then focuses on Ganga’s journey in search of the man she married, with her infant son. It is about how she has to face exploitation and abuse every step of her way.
All of it leads Ganga to end up into a brother, and eventually, she is called to perform at Narendra’s family-organised wedding. It is here where the two finally meet. Narendra then fights against his family as he wants his family to give Ganga her rightful position.
But in their eyes, Ganga is already ‘polluted’ and society cannot accept her. The series of events leads to Narendra leaving with Ganga and his son against all the odds.
The film was ahead of its time and surely faced a lot of criticism from society. The songs of the movie also ruled everyone’s heart.
