Birthday Special! Let’s Take a Look At The Incredible Bollywood Journey Of Manoj Kumar

Cinema legend Manoj Kumar turns 81 today. The actor was born in Abbottabad which is now in Pakistan on 24th July 1937. Manoj Kumar was born as Harikishan Giri Goswami.

The handsome star stepped in Bollywood in the year 1960 with film Kaanch Ki Gudia. However, later, he focused on directing films apart from acting.

Manoj Kumar had given several hits where he was seen romancing the actresses and fans couldn’t stop praising him. However, he is still known for showing his patriotic side in the film Purab Aur Paschim. It earned him another title ‘Bharat’ Kumar.

He is also fondly known as the inventor of the facepalm.

Some of the memorable filsm of the handsome star include Shaheed, Woh Kaun Thi?, Gumnaam, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, Upkar, Aadmi, Kranti, Hariyali Aur Raasta, Himalay Ki God Mein, Do Badan, Patthar Ke Sanam and Purab Aur Paschim.

Manoj Kumar won a series of reputable awards for his outstanding contribution to the cinema. In 1992, the government of India honoured the veteran star with the Padma Shri. He also won a National Film Award for Upkaar and a Dadasaheb Phalke Award for lifetime contribution to Indian cinema.

The veteran star might be away from the silver screens but he is often making public appearances.

Here are some of the interesting facts about the star which many of you might be not aware:

  1. During his teens, the actor was a great admirer of Bollywood superstar Dilip Kumar and he decided to name himself Manoj Kumar after Dilip Kumar’s character in Shabnam.
  2. On former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri’s request, Manoj made Upkaar. In it, he played both a soldier and a farmer. He won the Filmfare award for Best Director.
  3. After his movie Kranti (1981) did well in box office, he quit acting in 1995 as his movies were not performing well.
  4. Manoj Kumar filed a lawsuit against Shah Rukh Khan in 2007 when SRK depicted his character to sneak into a movie premiere, by holding his hand over his face.

These days biopics are in huge demand. Many well-known personalities are keen on making a film on their life and presenting it on the big screens. However, Manoj is totally against it and doesn’t want to expose his personal life in public.

He said, “I am against my biography also. I can write about myself, but there are other persons involved in it and I will have to name them. I’ll be exposing them then, which I don’t like.”
