Khiladi Akshay Kumar has turned 51 today. Just like any other year, this year too proved to be good for him as his films are performing extremely well on box-office leaving behind the Khans of Bollywood. His recent release 'Gold' is being loved by the fans. However, he didn't achieve this career overnight or within few years. In fact, he attained this stardom after decades of struggle.
From being a complete outsider, to ruling the box-office, he has come a really long way. For years, he was labelled as the most underrated actor of Bollywood since years, especially in terms of box-office collections. But we can’t deny the fact that he has given one of the best films ever. His performance in Airlift, Special 26, Holiday, Bhool Bhulaiya, Rustom, etc are spectacular.
However, he is probably the only actor who gives tough competition to the Khans, not only in terms of good films, but from commercial aspect too. He has maintained a constant position on the Forbes as the ‘highest paid actors’ list in the world.
The Khans were ruling the industry in early 2000s. At that time, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgan, and Hrithik Roshan were struggling to get into the race of Khans and challenge the trio.
Akshay's career took a jump with Sangharsh (1999) and Dhadkan (2000). The Hindi film industry also witnessed a major shift in terms of filmmaking and the heroes onscreen. The protagonist was no longer a street-smart, long-haired man who was fighting for his revenge. With 'Dhadkan' he proved that he is not just an angry young man. He can infact fit into any tole given.
As time passed, Akshay finally managed to get into the race and positioned himself as one of the best actors of Bollywood.
The actor, in an interview confessed that he came into this industry to make money- Lots of money. Probably, this is the reason that he does a minimum of 3 to 4 films each year. But he also said that after earning money he realised that he isn't satisfied. He wanted to expand his horizon. He said that he was bored of doing action films. And then, he stepped into comedy. He had a tough time convincing the makers of Hera Pheri, but we are happy that he stepped out of the box, and utilized his talent. Because rest is history now!
The reason why he has grown such a big fan following is not just because he acts well, but also, because of the type of content he chooses. When almost all the actors rejected 'Toilet:Ek Prem Katha', majorly because of its title, Akshay Kumar won everybody's hearts by taking up the project and executing it beautifully.
Akshay famously said that there was a time he gave 16 consecutive flops. So, how did he survive? “You have to be a producer’s actor and keep good terms with them. The industry people are Dilwale but you must never ever forget professionalism,” he has said.
He is a self made man, and that's why we like him. But what we love about him that even after reaching the heights, success hasn't got into his head. He is one of the most humble celebrity in the Industry. He teaches martial arts to girls for free, and always motivate them for self defense. He is probably the only actor who takes a stand for our real heroes. The actor gained much appreciation after he launched 'Bharat Ke Veer' app in collaboration with government last year.
We wish him a very happy birthday!
