An own goal from Mario Mandzukic and strikes from Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe were enough to take Les Bleus home.

Social media exploded after France's historic win, with celebrities across the world congratulating the team on their monumental success. Amitabh Bachchan also took to Twitter to extend his wishes but his words did not go down well with fans.

Bachchan wrote, "T 2868 - Thats it then ... AFRICA won the World Cup 2018 !!!" (sic), magnifying the fact that a number of players in the victorious French squad were of African origin.

16 out of 23 players in the France team are from immigrant backgrounds, with their families having emigrated to the country from other nations such as Cameroon, Morocco, Angola, etc. Here are some of the critical reactions to Bachchan's tweet:

This was the second title World Cup won by France, with the previous one coming 20 years ago in 1998. France along with the trophy was awarded $38 million and the runners-up were awarded $28 million.

Amitabh Bachchan is shooting with Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Mouni Roy for Bramhastra which is a superhero trilogy by Ayan Mukherjee. Amitabh Bachchan will also be working in a suspense thriller with Taapsee Pannu which will also be co-produced by Shah Rukh Khan's production house Red Chillies Entertainment.
