The Government of India is going strong and firm in its decision to increase the use of electric vehicles in the country. After a good amount of reduction in GST that is applicable on electric vehicles, the Indian government has sanctioned around more than 500 electric buses so as to be used across 65 different cities of India.
The decision by the center will be implemented shortly in India.
Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant confirmed the same on Monday and he said that 5645 e-buses has been sanctioned so far by the inter-ministerial panel for EVs'.
Amitabh Kant tweeted, "The inter-ministerial committee for EVs today sanctioned 5,645 electric buses for intracity operations in 65 cities and for intercity operations to 8 state transport undertakings. This will give huge impetus to automobile sector, clean up our cities & drive Make in India.”
This is considered to be one of the latest moves by the Indian government to promote the project of clean mobility modes in India. The GST council led by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced last week that there will be a reduction of the GST applicable on EVs from a whopping 12% to 5%. This will help in bringing down the overall cost of the electric vehicles for those who are willing to buy it.
In the 2019 union budget, the Finance Minister also said that there will be a rebate in the tax, which will be up to Rs.1.5 lakh on the loan interest that are taken for electric vehicles. The government aims at making the electric vehicles affordable for the common people. The electric vehicles are very much costlier than their counterparts and the reduction in the tax and GST will encourage more buyers to go for the electric vehicles, instead of the traditional petrol or diesel driven vehicles.
