20 KM Wide Liquid Lake Discovered On Mars, Confirms An Alternative Life On Planet

Now the answer is right in front of us!

We have been hearing this from time immemorial that there is life on Mars. This has now been proven by scientists after scientists have been doing multiple kinds of research. Presence of water in liquid form under the surface of the red planet is a key element to human existence.

An Italian team of eleven members headed by Professor Roberto Orosei of the Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica in Bologna have discovered a 20-kilometre wide lake that sits under the southern polar ice cap of Mars. The finding has further given confirmation to the decade-old argument if Mars has a persistent water body or not.

Dr Anil Bhardwaj, Director of the Ahmedabad-based Physical Research Laboratory told a leading daily that the atmospheric pressure on Mars is a hundred times lesser than on Earth, ensuring that water will be found either in ice or vapour form.

This meant that even if there was water on the planet, it would be present much beneath the surface. However, the study conducted by the Italian scientists is based on data collected over three years which previous researchers often had a vague idea about but didn’t have any conclusive finding.

It might be possible that water is mixed with other compounds including salts that helps water to retain its liquid form. Radar instruments like 'Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding' (MARSIS) examine the planet’s surface and the immediate subsurface by sending out a signal and then examining what is bounced back.

Dr Orosei however, said there is no technology as of now that could investigate the discovery. The discovery though shows a possibility that humans could exploit the red planet for future survival. Though, it is important to rationalize the cost structure of going to Mars.

Dr Ghosh told a leading daily, “We have just found evidence of water. (It is a) minute example (and) it is not economically viable to extract it, so you have to show that Martian water can be extracted, converted. The game of space exploration is also in large part (about) doing things at a rational cost.”
